In Singapore, licensed money lending companies are highly regulated. This boosts the money lending industry in the country.
Both the borrowers and the lending institutions feel safe and secured for every transaction.
Add to that, the Ministry of Law applied unsecured loan caps for every individual. For example, a low-income borrower with less than $20,000 annual earning can only get a maximum loan amount of $3,000.
For a better understanding, here is a simple example:
Borrower X earns $1,500 a month, which means he earns $18,000 annually. This means he can borrow as much as $3,000 from licensed money lenders. If Borrower X takes out a $1,000 loan, he can only apply for $2,000 loan from another licensed lender.
While those individuals who earn more than $20,000 has an aggregated loan cap of 6 times their monthly salary.
To cite a better example, here is a scenario:
Borrower Y has a monthly income of $2,000, which means the annual income is more than $20,000. The maximum total loan amount he can claim is $12,000 from all the licensed money lenders in Singapore.
If Borrower Y loan amount of $4,000 gets approved, he can only apply for $8,000 from other registered lenders.
Take note: The loan cap only includes the capital loan amount. Other fees and interest charge are not yet included.
